Instructional Services 
Instructional Support Services (ISS) help school districts provide rigorous academic instruction for all children. Based on the latest educational research and local needs, BOCES initiates courses of action, designs specific activities, and offers programs for students, parents, community, instructional staff, administrators, and boards of education.
Services offered to school districts include: Professional Development, Instructional Technology, Student-Based Services and Planning Services.

Curriculum Development

This program facilitates writing projects and promotes collaboration among districts. District writers may work independently following regional training on curriculum design. Participating districts will have access to writing projects other districts use in their curriculum. Districts may choose to purchase a subscription to CurricuPlan, a web-based program for curriculum writing. Other web-based programs for curriculum mapping and writing may also be offered.

eBoard is an easy-to-use online service that allows educators to quickly post information online for parents and students. It can be used by teachers, administrators, nurses, coaches or anyone within the school community with a need to communicate. eBoards foster a sense of community and increased visits to the district website.

Discovery Education unitedStreaming is a digital video-based learning resource. Subscribing educators gain on-demand access to 50,000 content-specific segments from 5,000 full-length educational videos. All videos are aligned to NYS learning standards and most include additional teacher resources. Subscription to unitedStreaming through BOCES includes membership at user group meetings, regional workshops and first level technical assitance.

My Learning Plan

My Learning Plan is a web-based professional development management system. The MLP system includes tracking of professional development hours, course approvals and alignment of district goals to professional development activities. Participation includes vendor provided technical support and two user group meetings hosted at BOCES.

The Center can customize professional development opportunities to meet school or district needs. Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE)

On-Site 2-Hour Violence Prevention (SAVE) Certification Course
This violence prevention course is for teachers, administrators and support staff. The course covers the six mandated subject areas required for all licensed school employees teaching in public or charter schools. All licensed personnel hired after July 1, 2001, are required to present documentation indicating completion of the two-hour violence prevention certification course. Participants receive their certification of completion immediately following the training.
Comprehensive Review of SAVE Law
As a regional office of the NYS Education Department, our staff develops and implements training throughout New York State related to the 18 major components of the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) legislation. Topics include the additional responsibilities facing school administrators, student support and instructional staff to comply with all components of the SAVE law.
Technical Assistance with Required (SAVE) Annual Review and Update of District & Building Level Safety Plans and Codes of Conduct
The staff of the LISSSC will provide on-site technical assistance and support to your district and/or building level safety teams for the annual review and revision of your plans and codes. SSSC staff will work with district staff to ensure compliance with NYS requirements before plans and codes are submitted to SED.
School Safety Coordinator Network

- Attendance at two network member meetings per year that include facilitated discussion of current trends, requirements, and practices in school safety, violence prevention, and gang prevention/intervention
- Technical assistance in completion of VADIR forms, Codes of Conduct, Safety Plans
- Reduced rate for attending Western Suffolk BOCES regional trainings on school safety
- Additional customized professional development on-site is available
Services Related to Gangs

Comprehensive District/School Gang Assessment
LISSSC consultants with a background in gang surveillance and prosecution will conduct a districtiwide or school-wide assessment to determine the possible presence or activity of gangs. The assessment will include conducting:
- Gang Presence/Activity Assessment
- Physical inspection of all district buildings
The assessment process will include photographing gang-identified graffiti and preparation of a photo log; interviewing key school personnel; and a synopsis of findings to school administrators and staff.
Street Gang Awareness Training - 3 Hour Training for all School Staff Members
This LISSSC training will use lecture, audio-visual aids, and handout materials to address the scope of the national and local gang problem and provide definition and understanding of the components of a gang. Additional topics will include understanding why gangs have surfaced on Long Island and other suburban communities, identifying national gangs that have a prescence in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and determining the scope and presence of gang activity in your school.

Professional opportunities that offer guidance, support, and collaboration are necessary for the continued safe and optimal delivery of school health services. The School Health Services Network will link to regional and state resources including the NYS Education Department's Statewide School Health Services Center (SSHSC). Memberhsip includes:
- No cost for all district nurses to attend School Nursing Professional & Practice Issues workshops that are held several times each year. Timely and relevant topics are addressed with guest speakers, case studies, panel discussions and networking opportunities.
- A reduced rate for all district school nurses to attend the Annual School Nursing Election Day Professional Development workshop
- One in-district (before, during or at the end of the school day) professional development for school nurse and/or school staff and administration
- Ongoing telephone and e-mail technical assistance and support with issues related to the delivery of school health services including policy development
- Oversight of new school nurses who request participation in the School Nurse Mentor Partnership Program, a collegial support system that is facilitated by members of this office's School Nurse Advisory Council

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a reasearch-based, proactive systems approach for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors that create positive school environments. School-based leadership teams through training, coaching and technical assistance will develop a continuum of positive behavior support strategies for all students in all environments. Implementing a school-wide positive behavioral system will enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities to improve the link between validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occurs.
The three-tiered implementation/training plan will follow the NYS PBIS Model.
PBIS addresses
- High rates of problem behavior that interfere with learning
- Ineffective and inefficient disciplinary practices
- Lack of general and specialized behavior interventions
- Lack of supports for staff to address problem behavior
- Negative school climates
Outcomes associated with school-wide PBIS
- Decrease in the numbers of Office Discipline Referrals
