Instructional Services

Instructional Support Services help school districts provide rigorous academic instruction for all children. Based on the latest educational research and local needs, BOCES initiates courses of action, designs specific activities, and offers programs for students, parents, community, instructional staff, administrators, and boards of education. Services are offered to school districts in these broad categories:

Professional Development including Digital Resources/Services and Student Support Services

Instructional Technology, including Guidance Services, School Library Services and Model Schools

Planning Services including demographic, enrollment and facilities analysis

Student-Based Services including Regional Summer School and Outdoor/Environmental Education.

 

(School Improvement for Standards Implementation)

This program provides a variety of programs and services to support school improvement.  Offerings are grounded in best instructional practices to address the most current federal, state and local educational issues.  Call for assistance in creating a program to address a need specific to your district.

Professional Development Base Service

Participation in the base service includes the costs of BOCES planning, management, technical support and leadership.  BOCES provides phone consultation and makes initial site visits when member districts request detailed information on services.  This is a mandatory prerequisite to all Professional Development 506 services.  Employees of districts in the base service receive member rates for attendance at regional workshops.

This program facilitates projects for writing your curriculum and promotes collaboration among districts. District writers may work independently following regional training on curriculum design. Participating districts will have access to projects other districts use to write their curriculum. Districts may choose to purchase a subscription to CurricuPlan, a web-based program for curriculum writing. Other web-based programs for curriculum mapping and writing are also available.

Race to the Top (Base Service)

Network Team Support Consortium

Western Suffolk BOCES will provide regional coordination of information, technical assistance, and Network Team training (NYSED-RTTT) in compliance with the Race to the Top State initiative.  Collaborate with SED, NYS, BOCES, and local networks to address RTTT issues related to your district.  This consortium will provide:

  • Support/assistance in developing documents required by SED
  • ongoing updates and technical assistance on RTTT requirements from consortium coordinator
  • Western Suffolk BOCES personnel will travel to Albany for the required RTTT-SED trainings and provide you with turnkey training
  • A total of 30 seats/year for District Network Teams to participate in regional professional development on RTTT:
           a.  Adopting internationally-benchmarked standards and
           assessments that prepare students for success in college
           and the workplace
 b.  Building instructional data systems that measure students' success and inform teachers and principals how they can improve their practice
           c.  How to recruit, develop, retain, and reward effective
           teachers and principals

This service maintains the former NYS-funded Teacher Center in accordance with applicable laws and regulations (Ed Law 316, Commissioner Regulation Part 81).  Includes a representative council of stakeholders from member districts (collective bargaining, administration), higher education, parent and business.  The advisory council will meet periodically to determine future directions and review program services.

Participation includes:

  • Unlimited use of teacher workroom with a hot and cold laminator, Ellison die cuts, poster maker, button and magnet maker, and educational literature.
  • Phone consultation and initial planning/identification of professional development programs
  • Newsletters (3/year) focusing on current research and instructional strategies to support student learning
  • Application as partners and professional delivery systems for other grant opportunities
  • Opportunity for collaboration with institutions of higher education for local cohorts of graduate certificate programs

On-Site Training in Child Abuse Identification and Reporting

This web-based Observation and Appraisal Management System offers district leaders fast and easy scheduling, managing, completing, and reporting of all components of the evaluation process for teachers, principals, administrators and non-instructional staff, including:  classroom observations, informal walkthroughs, peer reviews and observations, self-reflective assessments, student growth analysis, portfolio evaluation, individual or team action research and principal evaluation.

Learn360 is an interactive, media-on-demand service for K-12. With a subscription to Learn360, teachers can search more than 9,200 digital video titles and 28,500 video clips as well as a comprehensive set of speeches, images, songs, research articles and activities from top educational publishers.  Content is correlated to state standards.  Subscription includes membership at yearly user group meetings, regional workshops and first level technical support.

NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association)

NWEA is an educational evaluation system, Measures of Academic Progress (MAP).  This is a unique system for monitoring instruction in English language arts, mathematics, and science.  The system meets the NYS education reforms that require local accountability for student achievement and has been proven beneficial in informing the instructional process and improving school/curriculum.  Subscription includes content, training and support.

 

 

Student Support Services

The Student Support Services Center provides programs and services that support school improvement by addressing those barriers to learning that focus on the physical, social and emotional development needs of students.  School and student health are essential components of a comprehensive approach to increasing student achievement in the 21st century.  These professional development opportunities use evidence-based strategies to increase student attendance, decrease the incidents of violence and suspensions and ultimately improve academic success.

School Health Services Network

The School Health Services Network will link to regional and state resources including the NYS Education Department's Statewide School Health Services Center (SSHSC).  Membership includes:

  • A reduced rate for all district and substitute school nurses to attend School Nursing Professional & Practice Issues workshops several times each year with guest speakers, case studies, panel discussions and networking opportunities
  • A reduced rate for all district school nurses to attend the annual School Nursing Election Day Professional Development workshop
  • Ongoing mentoring for new and substitute district nurses who participate in the Overviews of Nursing series
  • One in-district (before, during or at the end of the school day) professional development for school nurses and/or school staff and administration
  • Electronic newsletter sent to member administrators and each district's school nurse-liaison four times per year
  • Technical assistance and support for the online Statewide School Health Services Center's (SSHSC) School Health Assessment Tool
  • Customized technical assistance and support with issues related to school health services including policy development
  • Additional support as needed for school health services, implementing the regulations of the Commissioner of Education, district school health program review, school immunization attendance requirements, mandated screening procedures and protocols, and medication administration procedures

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

This is a research-based, proactive systems approach for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors that create positive school environments.  School-based leadership teams will receive training, coaching and technical assistance to develop a continuum of positive behavior support strategies for all students in all environments.  The goal is to enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities to improve the link between validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occurs. The three-tiered implementation/training plan will follow the NYS PBIS Model. PBIS addresses:

  • High rates of problem behavior that interfere with learning
  • Ineffective and inefficient disciplinary practices
  • Lack of general and specialized behavior interventions
  • Lack of supports for staff to address problem behavior
  • Negative school climates

Outcomes associated with school-wide PBIS

  • Decrease in the numbers of Office Discipline Referrals
  • Increase in instructional time
  • Decrease in administrators' time spent on discipline issues
  • Sustainability through team approach

School Safety Network

  • Attendance at two network member meetings per year to discuss current trends, requirements, and practices in school safety, violence prevention, and gang prevention/intervention
  • Technical assistance in completion of VADIR forms, revision of Codes of Conduct and update of Safety Plans as they relate to Dignity for all Students Act (DASA)
  • Technical support and assistance in implementing "Is my School Safe?", a data-driven planning tool for school safety (NYSCSS)
  • Reduced rate for attending Western Suffolk BOCES regional trainings on school safety
  • Additional customized professional development on-site is available

Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE)

The 2-hour course covers the six mandated subject areas required for all licensed school employees teaching in public or charter schools. Services Related to Gangs

Comprehensive District/School Gang Assessment
Consultants with a background in gang surveillance and prosecution will conduct a district-wide or school-wide assessment to determine the possible presence or activity of gangs. Includes inspecting all district buildings, photographing gang-identified graffiti and preparing a photo log; interviewing key school personnel; and summarizing findings to school administrators and staff.

Street Gang Awareness Training
This three-hour training for all school staff members uses lecture, audio-visual aids, and handouts to address the scope of the national and local gang problem and provide definition and understanding of the components of a gang. Additional topics will include understanding why gangs have surfaced on Long Island and other suburban communities, identifying national gangs that have a presence in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and determining the scope and presence of gang activity in your school.
