SUMMARY:Discover the Magic of the Crosscutting Concepts in Your Life Science Lessons 6-12 **IN PERSON** presented by Glen Cochrane - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:The Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs) provide students with the mental tools needed to help engage in and make sense of complex phenomena from a scientific point of view or to solve problems in engineering. They are essential in understanding the Disciplinary Core ideas (content) and that different CCCs align with different science and engineering practices. We will view sample phenomena through the lens of the CCCs to demonstrate how students can use them when constructing their own understandings. Examples of how the CCCs can be highlighted in your lessons will illustrate their importance in the three-dimensional instruction of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS)\, while still maintaining fidelity to the Living Environment Key Ideas of the Intermediate Level Science Core Curriculum Grades 5-8 and to the Living Environment Core Curriculum. Included will be:• Having students both view and explain phenomena through the lens of the CCCs.• Gaining familiarity with the CCCs\, their potential for making science real and relevant to all students• Using CCCs as resources for realizing the NGSS vision of all standards

SUMMARY:Serious\, Scary\, or Insignificant? A Psychiatric Perspective on Threat Assessment in Youth **IN PERSON** 8:30-11:30am
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will focus on the psychiatric threat assessment process and related concerns. The presentation will be divided into three components: Part 1) Critical Aspects of Threat Assessment: Essential aspects of the threat assessment process identifying a range of risk factors and potential warning signs. Lessons learned from school shooting tragedies will be discussed. Issues to be emphasized: 1) Appreciating that threatening communications in social media posts\, drawings\, and writings may be clues of potential impending violence. 2) The importance of exploring the degree and intensity of the student’s interest in the lives and methods of prior mass shooters. 3) The need to perform a thorough evaluation even if a threat appears relatively minor. 4) The potential need in high-risk cases for collaboration with law enforcement\, forensic evaluations and mandated hospitalization or residential treatment. Part 2) Case Discussion: Threat assessment concepts will be exemplified through anonymized\, actual case vignettes and discussion with the attendees regarding their own cases and experiences. Participants will be provided with presentation slides\, handouts\, threat assessment monographs from the FBI and Secret Service\, and review articles. Part 3) Firearm Safety Presentation: The goal of this presentation is to help the participants improve their awareness of gun safety issues which impact children and adolescents. Mortality and morbidity from firearm injury is a critical issue transcending class\, race\, and geography. Educators and school mental health counselors need to become familiar with firearm safety issues and how to ask the essential questions. SUMMARY:Use a NYSSLS Approach to Engage Students in Your Earth Science Classroom **IN PERSON** Presented by Brian Vorwald - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:With the first administration of the NYSSLS based ESS Regents scheduled for June 2025\, teachers have only a few years to make a thoughtful and measured transition to a NYSSLS based regents Earth Science course. It is possible to transition to the pedagogy that supports the three-dimensional approach of the NYSSLS (New York State Science Learning Standards) while continuing to teach science aligned to the Physical Setting/Earth Science Core Curriculum. Having students make connections between the three dimensions of scientific knowledge can better prepare them for the PS/ES Regents exam while they develop a coherent and scientifically based view of the world. Start with the complex phenomena (for science) or problems (for engineering) and let students ask questions\, explore\, and use the Science and Engineering Practices\, and Crosscutting Concepts to construct their own understandings of the disciplinary core ideas (content). Students learn by doing the science and engineering practices\, engaging in discourse\, and construction understandings of Earth and Space Science main ideas. Included will be:• Principles of phenomena-based instruction• Steps in implementing student centered instruction• Steps to integrate NYSSLS 3D instruction while still teaching the Intermediate Level Science and Physical Setting/Earth Science core curricula• Delve into the NYSSLS Performance Expectations and begin designing lessons aligned with phenomena and 3D learning• Introduction to storylines• Using a lesson screener to analyze lessons for 3D alignment• How assessments will change• Resources to help with transitioning to NYSSSLS **B.Y.O.D. SUMMARY:Introduction to Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) Intermediate (grades 3+) **IN PERSON** presented by Kristina Seeley - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) in the Red\, Gold\, Purple and Teal systems are for students in grades 3-12 who are reading below grade level. These systems deliver powerful\, research-based intervention designed to bring students up to grade-level performance in as little as 18-24 weeks. The intervention should take place consistently in suggested small groups in addition to classroom literacy instruction to see maximum results. In this workshop\, participants will receive three-days of intensive training (two days of start-up training and one follow-up day) on the LLI Red\, Gold\, Purple and Teal systems and will learn specific strategies to address the needs of older readers who need extra support. In addition to an overview of the components and implementation of LLI Red\, Gold\, Purple and Teal systems\, professional development for these systems delves into the advanced routines needed for intermediate students. These routines include a focus on comprehension\, vocabulary development\, and fluency as well as phonics and word study principles\, book discussion formats\, writing about reading routines\, novel study units\, test taking study\, and silent reading. Must attend all 3 days. Materials not included. Please bring The LLI Red OR Gold OR Purple OR Teal System Guide\, Prompting Guide 1\, Prompting Guide 2\, and one Lesson Guide to use during the seminar. These materials are all included in Box 1 of the LLI materials. There should be 1 system for every 1-2 participants. Eligible for 18 hours CTLE credit. If district pays\, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session. PLEASE VIEW FLYER FOR FULL

SUMMARY:Artificial Intelligence and the ELA Classroom - 2 Part VIRTUAL Workshop - presented by Andrea Kellman-Bryan\, MA\, SDA - 4-6pm
DESCRIPTION:What do teachers do when there’s a program that writes paragraphs and essays for our students? The Artificial Intelligence CHAT GPT arrived on our phones and laptops on November 30\, 2022 creating a firestorm discussion around Artificial Intelligence in the English Language Arts classrooms across the world! Of course\, the initial response was often one of dismay as visions of academic dishonesty plagued English teachers far and wide. This PD is designed to initiate the conversation that we educators ride the wave of AI\, and show our students what AI might not be able to do. Also\, what can we do to decrease AI’s hold on our students’ minds? And in turn\, invite them to a world AI wishes it could follow. Eligible for 4 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1/2 Consortium seat. SUMMARY:Latin and Greek Word Roots: The Keys to the Castle of Academic Vocabulary **IN PERSON** presented by Amy Benjamin - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge about Latin and Greek roots helps us figure out unfamiliar words\, deepen our understanding of words\, and find relationships among words that we didn’t even know were related. But how can we teach word roots without just giving out lists and worksheets? We know that way doesn’t lead to durable learning. In this full day workshop\, you will learn engaging\, memorable ways to build deep word knowledge through the principles of pattern recognition\, etymology\, visuals\, and meaningful repetition. We can help students hone their linguistic intuition so they can feel more confident around academic vocabulary.
