SUMMARY:Preventing the Meltdown Understanding Environmental Factors Affecting Behavior **IN PERSON** presented by Michelle Levy - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:A common mistake made by schools is to assume that problematic student behaviors exist primarily within in the child and underestimate the degree to which external environmental factors impact student academic and behavioral performance. The fields of education and human behavior have long recognized the complex nature of student behavior and its relationship to the child’s learning environment Understanding this relationship and the presence of these factors helps educators and clinicians become more effective in their analysis and development of strategies to respond to behaviors which negatively impact student success. By examining the environment\, staff can use this knowledge to manipulate and alter the conditions which serve as triggers to the challenging behaviors thereby improving the learning environment for struggling learners and improving a positive classroom environment for all. Audience: Administrators\, clinicians\, support staff\, teachers Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1 Consortium seat. If district pays\, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session.Flyer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/12zyOK4j7mJufCJ-Oaktkjb1nK7LBRa-y/view?usp=sharingRegistration: https://www.mylearningplan.com/WebReg/ActivityProfile.asp?D=13208&amp:I=4619226“

SUMMARY:Reframed\, Refreshed and Refocused: AP Literature and Composition® **IN PERSON** presented by Edward Schmieder - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Much has changed with the literature course: it has a framework that narrows and focuses its scope\, and the exam is tightly aligned with that framework. Essay writing and scoring has been refocused as well. This full-day workshop will offer an opportunity for review\, and conversation about these shifts. It will then shift to reading and writing strategies that address key dimensions that remain at the heart of the course: -complexity\, -patterns\, and -tone. The leader will present several class-tested strategies for hands on practice and post-practice discussion. While much has changed about the course\, it is still rooted in reading closely for understanding and interpretation. And it is still grounded in writing effective analytical essays. Audience: New or Veteran AP English Lit Teachers and HS Teachers of AP Lit Bound Students Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1 Consortium seat. SUMMARY:Adjusting Instruction to Address Behavior 2-Part Workshop **IN PERSON** presented by Michelle Levy - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Many teachers face disruptive behaviors in their classrooms. Researchers have investigated the relationships between instructional practices and student engagement and academic success. When students are frustrated by academic tasks\, this often results in behaviors that interfere with teaching and learning. Participants will learn effective research based instructional strategies that have been shown to increase student engagement and feelings of success with academic tasks while creating a positive learning environment for all students. Participants will learn how to identify the reasons behind student behaviors associated with the completion of academic tasks and use this information to implement a variety of instructional practices such as opportunities to respond\, active engagement strategies\, checks for understanding\, differentiated instructional practices\, and modifications and adaptations to instructional tasks and curricular content. Audience: Teachers\, support staff\, administratorsFlyer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1khyo6XIuj2lRzRwCBtKRWRTPETG9a_Y3/view?usp=sharing Eligible for 12 hours CTLE credit. SUMMARY:Preparing Students for the New Earth and Space Sciences Regents Exam: Transitioning Regents Earth Science Courses to the Three-Dimensions of the New York State Science Learning Standards **IN PERSON** Presented by Brian Vorwald - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Audience: Teachers of Regents Earth Science and Science Leaders The first administration of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) based Earth and Space Sciences Regents exam is scheduled for June 2025. Teachers must transition to a NYSSLS based regents ESS course. The format of the new exam will be item clusters\, groups of multiple items that provide a coherent path towards building the three dimensions (Disciplinary Core Ideas\, Crosscutting Concepts\, and Science and Engineering Practices) anchored in a phenomenon. Following a phenomena-based storyline will provide students the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge in context. Teachers must align their ESS curriculum with the NYSSLS expectations which will be assessed on the new regents exam. It is possible to transition to the pedagogy that supports the NYSSLS three-dimensional approach while continuing to teach science aligned to the Physical Setting/Earth Science Core Curriculum. Having students make connections between the three dimensions of scientific knowledge can better prepare them for the PS/ES Regents exam while they develop a coherent and scientifically based view of the world. Start with the complex phenomena (for science) or problems (for engineering) and let students ask questions\, explore\, and use the SEPs and CCCs to construct their own understandings of the disciplinary core ideas (content). This is a paradigm shift to students constructing their own understandings with much less memorization of science facts. Students learn by doing science and engineering practices\, engaging in discourse\, and building understandings of Earth and Space Sciences’ main ideas. **B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Device) – Participants should bring a fully charged laptop\, Ipad\, or tablet to download resources and access websites throughout the workshop.FOR FULL DESCRIPTION\, PLEASE VIEW

SUMMARY:AP Literature and Composition® First About Reading\, Second About Writing **IN PERSON** presented by Edward Schmieder - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Although the course title gives equal billing to reading and writing\, the format of the exam makes it clear that reading supersedes writing well. How? The multiple-choice section is all reading (no writing) and two of the three essays are written responses to sight-read texts. Consequently\, reading-well is the thing. In fairness\, one practice addressing a MC passage will be included. In this full-day workshop\, we will focus on prose passages and poems (some from past exams) practicing a number of strategies engagement and focus. In alignment with the course’s framework\, focus will center five of the six Big Ideas: -Character\, -Setting\, -Structure\, -Narration\, and -Figurative Language. Of course\, Tone straddles Narration and Figurative Language. Attitude is everywhere! Also\, because we know all our students suffer from poetry-deficit-disorder\, poems will have pride of place between the two genres. A Q and A will wrap up the day.
