SUMMARY:How to Be a Kid - 2-Day Workshop **IN PERSON** presented by Dr. Crystal Miller - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:How To Be A Kid™ is a whole child\, kid-centric approach to learning that teaches kids the way that kids learn. It can be seamlessly integrated into ANY curriculum. The How To Be A Kid™ program has a strong base in Social-Emotional Learning and introduces the concept of Sensate Learning™ which incorporates the whole body\, multi-sensory methods and principles of neurodevelopment into education. The goal of this program is to teach educators how to introduce deliberate and strategic movement into the learning process to enhance focus\, retention\, and comprehension. Today we know that the more active the body is in learning\, the more meaningful connections the brain can make to the content. How To Be A Kid™ was thoughtfully designed to empower educators with knowledge and resources that can transform the learning process for the better. Eligible for 12 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1-1/2 Consortium seats. SUMMARY:Discover Strategies to Incorporate the Crosscutting Concepts in Your Life Science Lessons Gr 6-12 **IN PERSON** presented by Glen Cochrane - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Known as the forgotten dimension\, the Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs) provide students with the mental tools needed to help engage in and make sense of complex phenomena from a scientific point of view or to solve problems in engineering. They are essential in understanding the Disciplinary Core Ideas (content) and that the CCCs complement the Science and Engineering Practices. We will view sample phenomena through the lens of the CCCs to demonstrate how students can use them when constructing their own understandings. Examples of how the CCCs can be highlighted in your lessons will illustrate their importance in the expected three-dimensional instruction of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) for secondary life science courses. We will practice using the different CCCs while applying SEPs to familiar phenomena. Have students both view and explain phenomena through the lens of the CCCs. Included will be: -Gaining familiarity with the CCCs\, their potential for making science equitable\, real\, and relevant to all students: -Using CCCs as resources for realizing the NGSS vision of equity all standards

SUMMARY:Preparing Students for the New Biology Regents Exam: Transitioning Regents Biology Courses to the Three-Dimensions of the New York State Science Learning Standards Grades 6-12 **IN PERSON** presented by Glen Cochrane - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:The first administration of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) based Biology Regents exam is scheduled for June 2025. Teachers must transition to a NYSSLS based regents biology course. The format of the new exam will be item clusters\, groups of multiple items that provide a coherent path towards building the three dimensions (Disciplinary Core Ideas\, Crosscutting Concepts\, and Science and Engineering Practices) anchored in a phenomenon. Following a phenomena-based storyline will provide students the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge in context. Teachers must align their biology curriculum with the NYSSLS expectations which will be assessed on the new regents exam. It is possible to transition to the pedagogy that supports the NYSSLS three-dimensional approach while continuing to teach science aligned to the Living Environment Core Curriculum. Having students make connections between the three dimensions of scientific knowledge can better prepare them for the Biology Regents exam while they develop a coherent and scientifically based view of the world. Start with the complex phenomena (for science) or problems (for engineering) and let students ask questions\, explore\, and use the SEPs and CCCs to construct their own understandings of the disciplinary core ideas (content). This is a paradigm shift to students constructing their own understandings with much less memorization of science facts. Students learn by doing science and engineering practices\, engaging in discourse\, and building understandings of biology’s main ideas. **B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Device) – Participants should bring a fully charged laptop\, iPad\, or tablet to download resources and access websites throughout the workshop. SUMMARY:Teaching with Intention Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System A Two-Part Series - Gr K-8 **IN PERSON** presented by Kristina Seeley - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:PART 1: Administering the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System In Part 1\, we will focus on administering The Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment which provides teachers with precise tools and texts to observe and quantify specific reading behaviors. This workshop includes specific tutorials that provide ample practice to administer the assessment with fidelity\, following guidelines that minimize administrative discrepancies. Afterward\, you’ll feel confident assessing level A-Z! PART 2: Analyzing the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment and Using it to Inform Instruction In Part 2\, we focus on the fact that results drive instruction. Educators will discover practical ways to organize your data and a series of strategic action steps and goals that\, when used effectively\, provide positive\, incremental shifts in your literacy instruction. This will lead to confident readers and improved results. We will look at Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading Sets (part of Fountas and Pinnell Classroom) as an example of powerful resources that can link the data to instruction. These tools help teachers shift reading behaviors with their students and lift students’ level of thinking as they read. However\, you can easily apply this workshop to any curriculum you are using\, and you do not need the Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading sets to attend the workshop.Flyer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GJgAuVQaPC6BRiXuwU1KNDDMUQIDWNfI/view?usp=sharing Eligible for 12 hours CTLE credit.
