SUMMARY:Transitioning your Middle School or High School Science Program to the New York State Science Learning Standards to Engage your Students **IN PERSON* Presented by Brian Vorwald - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Audience: K-12 educators and chairs This full-day workshop will focus on the shifts in teaching and learning expected with the NYSSLS and is intended for educators new to the standards and for those who are looking for next steps in transitioning to standards-based learning. Once the standards are fully implemented\, this will be a paradigm shift to students constructing understandings of science by pursuing engaging phenomena and will involve much less memorization of science facts and procedures with students constructing their own understandings. Participants will engage in activities during which they will develop an awareness of the Standards’ three dimensions (3D)\, teaching approaches\, as well as how to start preparing for their implementation. Participants in this workshop will take away:• An understanding of the architecture for reading the standards• Knowledge of the three dimensions (science and engineering practices\, disciplinary core ideas\, and crosscutting concepts) and strategies for unpacking performance expectations which can be used guide curriculum development• Characteristics of good phenomena and how phenomenon-based strategies engage students• Strategies to begin adapting what we currently do to the three-dimensional NYSSLS approach• Examples of how 3D learning can be assessed• An understanding that the NYSSLS is inclusive and how to use the standards to reach all students• Resources associated with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the research based\, A Framework for K-12 Science Education (2012)• The capacity to share their understanding of the New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards with other teachers. **B.Y.O.D. SUMMARY:Latin and Greek Word Roots: The Keys to the Castle of Academic Vocabulary **IN PERSON** presented by Amy Benjamin - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge about Latin and Greek roots helps us figure out unfamiliar words\, deepen our understanding of words\, and find relationships among words that we didn’t even know were related. But how can we teach word roots without just giving out lists and worksheets? We know that way doesn’t lead to durable learning. In this full day workshop\, you will learn engaging\, memorable ways to build deep word knowledge through the principles of pattern recognition\, etymology\, visuals\, and meaningful repetition. We can help students hone their linguistic intuition so they can feel more confident around academic vocabulary. This workshop is especially useful for ELLs whose native language is based on Latin (Spanish\, French\, Portuguese\, Italian\, Romanian). Gr 4-12 Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit.
