SUMMARY:Explore the Vision for NYSSLS-based Science Instruction Gr 3-5 **IN PERSON** presented by Glen Cochrane - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Participants in this workshop will explore the three-dimensional expectations for teaching and learning with the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS). A goal of this workshop will be for participants to develop the understanding that students should be learning science by doing science and figuring out phenomena observable in the natural world. We will review the topics for grades 3\, 4 and 5 and some strategies for instruction. A brief review of the required investigations and where they might best fit into curriculum and instruction. Another goal is to look at a system of assessment that includes formative\, classroom performance\, and summative assessments. We will review released practice NGSS exams from other states and the samples from NYSED. The format for summative performance-based tasks is item clusters which are based performance expectations (PEs) and follow a phenomena-based storyline giving students the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge in context. The difference between assessments aligned with the three-dimensional pedagogy of the NYSSLS and traditional assessments will be considered. We will review drafts of classroom performance tasks and begin working with colleagues to construct cluster assessments that align with NYSSLS expectations to incorporate the three dimensions based on a performance expectation. **B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Device)** Participants should bring a fully charged laptop\, iPad\, or tablet to download resources and access websites throughout the workshop. Audience: Grades Elementary Teachers and Science Leaders FOR FULL DESCRIPTION\, PLEASE VIEW

SUMMARY:Preparing Students for the New Earth and Space Sciences Regents Exam: Transitioning Regents Earth Science Courses to the Three-Dimensions of the New York State Science Learning Standards **IN PERSON** Presented by Brian Vorwald - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Audience: Teachers of Regents Earth Science and Science Leaders The first administration of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) based Earth and Space Sciences Regents exam is scheduled for June 2025. Teachers must transition to a NYSSLS based regents ESS course. The format of the new exam will be item clusters\, groups of multiple items that provide a coherent path towards building the three dimensions (Disciplinary Core Ideas\, Crosscutting Concepts\, and Science and Engineering Practices) anchored in a phenomenon. Following a phenomena-based storyline will provide students the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge in context. Teachers must align their ESS curriculum with the NYSSLS expectations which will be assessed on the new regents exam. It is possible to transition to the pedagogy that supports the NYSSLS three-dimensional approach while continuing to teach science aligned to the Physical Setting/Earth Science Core Curriculum. Having students make connections between the three dimensions of scientific knowledge can better prepare them for the PS/ES Regents exam while they develop a coherent and scientifically based view of the world. Start with the complex phenomena (for science) or problems (for engineering) and let students ask questions\, explore\, and use the SEPs and CCCs to construct their own understandings of the disciplinary core ideas (content). This is a paradigm shift to students constructing their own understandings with much less memorization of science facts. Students learn by doing science and engineering practices\, engaging in discourse\, and building understandings of Earth and Space Sciences’ main ideas. **B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Device) – Participants should bring a fully charged laptop\, Ipad\, or tablet to download resources and access websites throughout the workshop.FOR FULL DESCRIPTION\, PLEASE VIEW
