SUMMARY:The NYS Science Learning Standards for Administrators: Aligning Science Programs with New Expectations for Learning and Assessment **IN PERSON** Presented by Brian Vorwald - 9-12pm
DESCRIPTION:The first administrations by the NY State Education Department of the new Grade 5 Elementary-Level Science Test and the Grade 8 Intermediate-Level Science Test will be in the spring of 2024 followed by the first administrations of the new Biology and Earth and Space Sciences Regents Exams in June 2025. The first administrations of the new Chemistry and Physics regents exams will be in June 2026. Elementary\, middle level\, and high school programs must be aligned with expectations of the P-12 NY State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) which will be assessed on the new exams. While the intermediate-level science test will be administered at the end of grade 8\, it will assess students’ learning in grades 6\, 7\, and 8 as well as the foundational learning in the elementary grades. Similarly\, the elementary test will assess students’ learning in grades 3\, 4\, and 5 which is built on foundational learning in grades K-2. This half-day workshop will help administrators become aware of the paradigm shifts in teaching and learning expected with the NYSSLS. They will gain an understanding that this approach involves less memorization of science facts and that students learn the disciplinary content by using the Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs)\, viewed through the lenses of the Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs). Administrators will gain an understanding of phenomenon-based learning that engages students in using their observations of the natural world in sense-making and constructing their own understandings and what it will look like in the NYSSLS aligned lessons. **B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Device) – Participants should bring a fully charged laptop\, Ipad\, or tablet to download resources and access websites throughout the workshop.FOR FULL DESCRIPTION\, PLEASE VIEW

SUMMARY:Aligning Middle School Science Programs to the New York State Science Learning Standards **IN PERSON** presented by Brian Vorwald - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Audience: Grade 6\, 7\, and 8 science educators and science leaders The first administration of the Grade 8 Intermediate-Level Science Test based on the P-12 New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) is scheduled for the spring of 2024. Science courses for grade 6\, 7\, and 8 in all school districts must be aligned with the NYSSLS. The format of the new exam will be item clusters\, groups of multiple items that provide a coherent path towards building the three dimensions (Disciplinary Core Ideas\, Crosscutting Concepts\, and Science and Engineering Practices) anchored in a phenomenon. Following a phenomena-based storyline will provide students the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge in context. Teachers must align their curriculum with the NYSSLS expectations which will be assessed on the new grade 8 exam. For students to be successful in NYSSLS-based high school regents courses they must experience three-dimensional learning of the Standards in their middle level science experiences. Participants in this workshop will explore three-dimensional expectations for teaching and learning with NYSSLS. We will explore developing activities in which students make connections between the three dimensions of scientific knowledge to develop a coherent and scientifically based view of the world. Start with the complex phenomena (for science) or problems (for engineering) and let students ask questions\, explore\, and use the SEPs and CCCs to construct their own understandings of the disciplinary core ideas (content). **B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Device) – Participants should bring a fully charged laptop\, Ipad\, or tablet to download resources and access websites throughout the workshop. FOR FULL DESCRIPTION\, PLEASE VIEW

SUMMARY:I Got This: Developing Supports and Interventions for Problematic Classroom Behaviors **IN PERSON** presented by Michelle Levy - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Promoting healthy and safe learning environments where students can receive the instruction and other supports they need to learn and achieve at high levels is one of the primary responsibilities of each school. Research has suggested that teachers and other school personnel often have received inadequate training in the understanding and management of problematic student behavior. This circumstance has often made both teachers and clinicians alike feel helpless in the development of successful responses to these behaviors. It is therefore important for educators to take advantage of the use of researched based behavioral science approaches. Figuring out the reasons behind a behavior is critical for the development of an appropriate response or intervention. By understanding that behavior is a form of student communication that is purposeful\, interactive\, predictable\, and learned through the visual representation of a behavior chain or pathway\, teachers and clinicians can become better equipped with the skills necessary to manage behavior effectively and efficiently. In this session\, participants will learn how to independently develop behavior interventions through a process that determines why a student engages in behaviors that impede learning and that are related to the classroom environment. Thinking about the circumstances and factors surrounding a behavior in a systematic manner will help teachers set up and manage their classrooms in a proactive and positive way.For full description\, please view flyer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1A4JJ2A7-DCHGVPxe8Gx5IB6fjlOivACu/view?usp=sharing Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. SUMMARY:Explore the New Vision for NYSSLS Science Assessments Gr 6-12 **IN PERSON** presented by Glen Cochrane - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Assessment thinking has expanded to a System of Assessment. Methods are used that inform both teachers and students so that instructional strategies can be formulated that support student learning. We will review the standard format for performance-based tasks and use assessment screeners to evaluate summative assessment examples. The difference between assessments aligned with the three-dimensional pedagogy of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) and traditional assessments will be considered. Small teams of participants will have an opportunity to construct 3D classroom performance tasks aligning to the standards. Included will be: -Future format of the new NYSSLS based Regents. -Components of a system of assessments. -Principles of Evidence-based Assessment. -Role of NGSS Evidence Statements. -Using Item Specifications to support writing assessments. -Performance Level Descriptions (PLDs) for instruction and assessment -Format for 3D assessment tasks -Evaluating assessments using task screenersFlyer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10azuHJRMc0OCVuXch3AioY6HYfpaGvss/view?usp=sharing Audience: Grades 6-12 Science Educators and Science Leaders Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. SUMMARY:Preparing Students for the New Biology Regents Exam: Transitioning Regents Biology Courses to the Three-Dimensions of the New York State Science Learning Standards Grades 6-12 **IN PERSON** presented by Glen Cochrane - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:The first administration of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) based Biology Regents exam is scheduled for June 2025. Teachers must transition to a NYSSLS based regents biology course. Teachers must align their biology curriculum with the NYSSLS expectations which will be assessed on the new regents exam. It is possible to transition to the pedagogy that supports the NYSSLS three-dimensional approach while continuing to teach science aligned to the Living Environment Core Curriculum. Having students make connections between the three dimensions of scientific knowledge can better prepare them for the Biology Regents exam while they develop a coherent and scientifically based view of the world. Start with the complex phenomena (for science) or problems (for engineering) and let students ask questions\, explore\, and use the SEPs and CCCs to construct their own understandings of the disciplinary core ideas (content). This is a paradigm shift to students constructing their own understandings with much less memorization of science facts. Students learn by doing science and engineering practices\, engaging in discourse\, and building understandings of biology’s main ideas. **B.Y.O.D. (Bring Your Own Device) – Participants should bring a fully charged laptop\, iPad\, or tablet to download resources and access websites throughout the workshop.
