SUMMARY:Adjusting Instruction to Address Behavior 2-Day Workshop presented by Michelle Levy - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Many teachers face disruptive behaviors in their classrooms. Researchers have found a relationship between instructional practices\, student engagement\, behavioral issues and academic success. When students are frustrated by academic tasks\, this often results in behaviors that interfere with teaching and learning. Participants will learn effective research based instructional strategies that have been shown to increase student engagement and improve success with academic tasks while creating a positive learning environment for all students. Participants will learn how to identify the reasons behind student behaviors triggered by the presentation and completion of academic tasks and then use this information to develop and implement a variety of instructional practices as well as curricular adaptions and modifications that can lead to improved behavior and academic success. Some of the research based strategies to be presented include differentiated instruction\, Universal Design for Learning\, explicit direct instruction and active engagement strategies. Audience: Teachers\, support staff\, administrators Eligible for 12 hours CTLE credit. Can use 2 Consortium seats. If district pays\, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session.\nFlyer: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_VxS-Kh82CWm_KqeyGv0dKJdCfN_DZYW/view?usp=sharing\nRegistration: https://www.mylearningplan.com/WebReg/ActivityProfile.asp?D=13208&I=5130631

SUMMARY:Explore Curriculum\, Instruction\, and Assessment Expectations of the New York State P-12 Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) for Grades 3-5 Presented by Glen Cochrane-8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:In this full-day workshop\, we will start by reviewing the science standards that outline what students in grades 3-5 are expected to know and be able to do. Teaching and learning are intended to be three-dimensional\, with the Disciplinary Core Ideas (content)\, Science Practices (skills)\, and Crosscutting Concepts (themes) present in all lessons. NYSSLS is designed with progressive expectations across grade bands K-2\, 3-5\, MS\, and HS\, making elementary science a foundation for secondary science. We will review clusters from released Elementary Level Science exams to demonstrate the skills and knowledge students need to succeed on the Grade 5 computer-based tests. Principles of assessment will be included\, along with time for teachers to use assessment tools to develop and evaluate their work. Included will be:-A review of the NYSSLS expectations for curriculum\, instruction\, and student learning for elementary level students;-Using a System of Assessment to evaluate student progression of learning;-Using the Performance Level Descriptions (PLDs) to review how they can be used to review curriculum opportunities for students to learn and how they are aligned to assessment;-Reviewing released item-clusters from the ELS demonstrating alignment to NYSSLS;-Reviewing sample 3D lessons aligned with the NYSSLS; -Comparing curriculum with novel NYSSLS-based assessments.**B.Y.O.D. SUMMARY:The Power of Picture Books in Student Identity Gr 2-6 *IN PERSON* presented by Sarah Cordove / Literacy Matters - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:In order for our students to feel valued in our classrooms they must be represented in the books we share with them. Whether it is the characters\, families\, cultures\, and settings on the pages of our read alouds or the author’s experiences that inspire the picture books we share\, our students need to feel represented and heard. Our mentor texts can be more than simply books we use to teach writing strategies and skills. These texts can also be tools to showcase and celebrate the lives of the students that sit before us and those who do not. This session will showcase culturally responsive picture books that contain a multitude of opportunities for minilessons within your writing instruction\, bringing excitement and inclusivity into your classroom. SUMMARY:Teaching a NYSSLS-Based Biology Course; Now What? Presented by Glen Cochrane *IN PERSON* - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Audience: Regents LS: Biology teachers and science leaders Launching a full-year NYSSLS-based Biology course? Whether you’re just getting started or refining your NYSSLS approach for students taking the LS: Biology Regents\, this workshop is your opportunity to build confidence\, clarity\, and effective classroom strategies. It will serve as a refresher\, placing three-dimensional\, phenomenon-based learning into an instructional context. Regardless of the curriculum your district is using to meet the “new” expectations of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS)\, we’ll unpack the why\, how\, and what behind these shifts-so you’re not just following a framework; you’re teaching with purpose.NYSSLS demands more from students and educators. Today’s learners are expected to learn science through active participation-asking questions\, building models\, analyzing data\, and applying core ideas to real-world phenomena. It’s not about memorizing facts; it’s about making sense of the natural world through evidence and explanation. This workshop will help you reframe your instruction around scientific thinking\, authentic application\, and meaningful assessment. You’ll leave with three-dimensional strategies you can implement tomorrow-and a vision that will guide you throughout the year.**B.Y.O.D. SUMMARY:Practice\, Analyze\, and Write NYSSLS Physics Cluster Questions *IN PERSON* presented by Richard Slesinski - 8:30-2:30pm
DESCRIPTION:As the NYSSLS-aligned Regents Physics exam approaches\, high school physics teachers need targeted support to navigate the exam’s most distinctive feature: cluster questions.
