A successful score on the Pre-Entrance Exam is required for applicants to Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Practical Nursing and Surgical Technology programs. Before registering for this exam, consider carefully your math and reading skills. Many applicants find that time spent building stronger math and reading skills before taking the exam helps them become better qualified applicants.
These three health programs have substantial class work and homework that require students to be proficient readers with a wide vocabulary and competent math problem solvers. BOCES statistics indicate that the passing rate on the Pre-Entrance Exam is higher for those who have solid math and reading skills. Only those who have recently completed an academic program with strong grades should consider proceeding directly to the Pre-Entrance Exam. All other prospective students should first take the Math & Reading Test.
Math & Reading Test (Register early, seating is limited.)
Students are encouraged to satisfactorily pass this test before enrolling in the Prep Class for Pre-Entrance Exams for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Practical Nursing or Surgical Technology. The test covers basic math computation and reading comprehension. Bring blue or black ink pen and photo id. If registering on the night of the test, only cash or money order will be accepted (exact amount if paying in cash). If you register online, bring your receipt.
The Math and Reading test can only be taken once within a 6-month period. Based on the results of your Math & Reading Test, you will be advised either to take the Basic Skills Class or enroll in the Prep Class for the Pre-Entrance Exam.

Take this class to help you prepare for the Pre-Entrance Exam in DMS, PN, or ST programs. Work on your reading comprehension, basic math skills, and critical thinking. Most students also find that the Prep Class helps them gain self-confidence and solidify their interest in pursuing the ac-ademic work necessary to succeed in these programs. Textbook additional.

A successful score on the Pre-Entrance Exam is the first step in applying to DMS, PN, or ST programs but does not guarantee admission. BOCES statistics indicate that the passing rate on the Pre-Entrance Exam is higher for those who complete the Prep Class. While all prospective students take the same Pre-Entrance Exam, register with the course number of the program you hope to enter. May be taken once a semester. Exam fee is $125.
