Empowering the Portrait of a Graduate Through School Library Media Specialists *IN PERSON* presented by Jeanne Huggard & Anne Lotito-Schuh – 8:30-11:30am

In the context of the New York State Portrait of a Graduate initiative, school library media specialists are essential partners in helping students develop the skills and competencies necessary for success in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. This presentation will explore the pivotal role school library media specialists play in supporting the Portrait of a Graduate framework by fostering critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Through innovative programming, information literacy instruction, and personalized support, school library media specialists help students build the research and problem-solving skills that are foundational to the Portrait of a Graduate’s vision. From guiding students in ethical use of information to nurturing inquiry-based learning and digital literacy, library media specialists are key to ensuring students’ ability to access, evaluate, and apply knowledge in meaningful ways. This session will highlight the collaborative opportunities between library media specialists and educator colleagues, demonstrate the alignment between library programs and the Portrait of a Graduate competencies, and showcase practical strategies for embedding these skills into learning experiences. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the critical role school library media specialists play in preparing all students for success.
