Mirrors & Windows: Using Picture Books to Inspire Culturally Responsive Writing – K-5 *IN PERSON* facilitated by Sarah Cordova – 8:30-2:30pm
How can teachers use mentor texts to model strong writing while honoring students’ diverse identities? In this workshop, participants will discover culturally responsive picture books that inspire writing, foster identity, and spark meaningful classroom conversations. Using the New York State Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework and the Next Generation Learning Standards, teachers will explore picture books as mirrors (reflecting students’ identities) and windows (broadening perspectives). Through hands-on analysis of text, illustrations, and narrative structure, participants will create minilessons that make writing instruction both culturally responsive and identity-affirming. By the end, teachers will leave with a curated set of picture books, ready-to-use minilessons, and strategies to empower student voice, identity, and writing skills. Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1 Consortium seat. If district pays, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session.
