Stronger Sentences, Stronger Writers: Sentence-Level Strategies to Strengthen Writing K-5 *IN PERSON* facilitated by Sarah Cordova – 8:30-2:30pm
How can teachers preserve the creativity and independence of a writing workshop while also giving students the explicit instruction they need to write clear, powerful sentences? This full-day workshop explores how sentence-level writing strategies can strengthen and enhance a workshop classroom. Drawing on research-based approaches to writing instruction, including strategies described in The Writing Revolution by Judith C. Hochman and Natalie Wexler, participants will learn how small, strategic shifts, such as sentence expansion, sentence combining, and structured paragraph work, can significantly improve student writing without abandoning the workshop model teachers value. These strategies fit naturally within minilessons, small-group instruction, and conferences, helping students build clarity, confidence, and control as writers. Through hands-on activities, analysis of student work, and lesson planning, teachers will leave with practical routines, mini-lessons, and tools they can immediately use to help students move from stronger sentences to stronger pieces of writing. Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1 Consortium seat. If district pays, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session.
