Disciplinary Literacy in Science: Reading and Writing Like a Scientist Gr 3-8 – 3-hour *IN PERSON* Workshop facilitated by Kinjal Nicholls, MA and Dana Carr-Ford, MA, Med- 8:30-11:30am

February 1, 2027 @ 8:30 am - 11:30 am

Scientific texts place unique demands on readers. Information is spread across prose, diagrams, models, graphs, and data tables that must be read together, not separately. Sentences are packed with technical vocabulary, and small words like “if,” “unless,” or “approximately” can completely change the meaning. This session gives teachers strategies for helping students move fluently among words, images, symbols, data, and diagrams, turning a data display into a written explanation, and judging the quality of evidence in an article or investigation. Also addressed is writing as a vehicle for reasoning, with attention to explanation, argumentation, and the precise language scientific claims require. Teachers leave with a toolkit of strategies, templates, sentence frames, and checklists connected directly to the science and engineering practices. Eligible for 3 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1-1/2 Consortium seats. If district pays, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session.
