Make Thinking Visible: Engaging Students in the Social Studies Classroom *IN PERSON* facilitated by Wendy Braxton – 8:30-2:30pm

This interactive professional development introduces teachers to Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) practices adapted specifically for the Social Studies classroom. Participants will experience engaging thinking tasks designed to promote curiosity, critical thinking, collaboration, and productive struggle. Teachers will explore practical strategies for forming groups, using vertical non-permanent surfaces to make student thinking visible, asking questions, and fostering greater student autonomy. Participants will examine how these teacher moves can increase student engagement while maintaining high expectations and rigorous learning. Teachers will leave with classroom-ready strategies they can immediately apply within their existing Social Studies curriculum. Learning Outcomes: -Construct compelling Social Studies thinking tasks that foster student curiosity, deepen critical thinking, and encourage productive struggle. -Implement BTC methodologies for forming student groups, utilizing collaborative spaces, and facilitating inquiry to enhance visible thinking and classroom autonomy. -Evaluate actionable teacher moves designed for integration into current Social Studies curricula to elevate student engagement, partnership, and rigorous academic outcomes. Audience: 6 – 12 Social Studies Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1 consortium seat. If district pays, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session.
