Pages with Purpose: Bringing Grammar to Life with Picture Books Gr 3-8 *IN PERSON* facilitated by Sarah Cordova – 8:30-2:30pm
Move beyond worksheets and isolated drills-this interactive workshop shows grades 3-8 teachers how to use powerful picture books as mentor texts for authentic grammar instruction aligned to the NYS Next Generation ELA Standards. Using texts by Matt de la Peña, Kwame Alexander, Andrea Wang, Joanna Ho, and more, participants will explore how grammar naturally lives inside rich, engaging language. Throughout the session, we’ll make explicit connections to the NYS Next Generation Language Standards, showing how to teach conventions (L.3-L.8) in ways that are meaningful, contextualized, and transferable to student writing. Participants are encouraged to bring a few of their own favorite picture books to begin creating lessons tailored to their own classrooms. Teachers will leave with adaptable minilesson ideas, a bank of mentor text titles, and practical strategies that help students not only understand grammar-but use it purposefully to communicate clearly and effectively. Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1 Consortium seat. If district pays, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session.
