When History Gets Hard: Building Confidence for Difficult Classroom Conversations *IN PERSON* facilitated by Wendy Braxton – 8:30-2:30pm

Discussing difficult and sometimes controversial topics in the social studies classroom can be challenging, especially when students bring different perspectives and experiences to the conversation. This workshop will help teachers build confidence and prepare for meaningful classroom discussions around challenging historical topics. Participants will explore practical strategies for creating a classroom environment where students can engage respectfully, thoughtfully, and authentically. Teachers will examine ways to anticipate challenging moments and respond when conversations take unexpected turns. Participants will leave with strategies and resources they can use immediately to support productive discussion, student voice, and deeper thinking. Learning Outcome: -Prepare for difficult classroom conversations with greater confidence. -Use practical strategies to guide respectful and productive student discussions. -Create opportunities for students to share perspectives, listen to others, and engage with challenging historical topics. Audience: Grades 7-12 Social Studies Teachers Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1 consortium seat. If district pays, district approval must be confirmed prior to start of session.
