In the exciting field of medical sonography, students learn to operate equipment that produce high-frequency sound waves. These provide images of the inside of the body to assist physicians with diagnosing and treating illnesses as well as to monitor fetal development. This accredited School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography at Western Suffolk BOCES prepares students to work with patients and medical staff in physicians’ offices, hospitals and clinics.
The BOCES curriculum integrates basic sciences, medical sciences and instruction in diagnostic medical sonography with supervised clinical experience in hospitals and doctors’ offices from Manhattan to Southampton. These clinical sites provide unique opportunities for learning and excelling as students rotate through five specialties of Abdominal, Breast Ultrasound, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Adult Cardiac and Vascular Sonography. Students will receive hands-on training with color flow Doppler and 3D/4D imaging.
What are the basic requirements to be a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer?
You must meet academic prerequisites and receive a successful score on the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) Pre-Entrance Test which is given several times a year at Wilson Tech’s Northport campus. Excellent personal references and a personal interview are also required. Read carefully all BOCES Admission Prerequisites before registering for the test.
