Supporting Students Through Loss 3-hour FREE Workshop facilitated by Camp Good Mourning – Paul Rubin – 8:30-11:30am
Did you know that 1 in 11 American children will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the age of 18 (CBEM, 2026)? Yet, despite the prevalence of childhood bereavement, 93% of educators report receiving no bereavement training. Grief touches every school, classroom, and community. Chances are, you have already worked with or cared for a grieving child, even if you didn’t realize it. This interactive workshop explores the impact of grief and loss on children and adolescents and equips participants with practical strategies for supporting grieving youth. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how grief manifests across developmental stages, how loss can affect a child’s emotional, behavioral, social, and academic functioning, and how caring adults can respond with compassion and confidence. Through discussion, videos, and real-life examples, and experiential activities, attendees will leave better prepared to support grieving children and their families. Key Takeaways for Participants -Understand common grief reactions in children and adolescents at different developmental stages -Recognize how grief can affect a child’s emotions, behavior, relationships, and academic performance -Learn effective communication strategies, including what to say-and what not to say-to a grieving child -Increase confidence in supporting grieving children and knowing when additional support or referrals may be needed Eligible for 3 hours CTLE credit
