Toolkit for Teaching the Middle East *IN PERSON* facilitated by Liz Burns Taormina – 8:30-2:30pm

This day-long workshop offers support to teachers of Global History II and others through content knowledge, teaching strategies, and ready-to-use instructional materials. Build your knowledge and skills for teaching about the Middle East in this workshop that focuses on the history behind the headlines. First, delve into teaching the Arab-Israeli conflict, a deeply sensitive topic often viewed through the lens of ancestral, religious, or ethnic identities. Because of this complexity, many educators feel hesitant or unprepared to address it. By utilizing primary sources, educators will gain the tools to foster objective civil discourse that will equip students to analyze the history critically, encouraging collaboration as they grapple with the long, multifaceted history of the region without being steered toward a single viewpoint. Then, explore the Middle East’s complex and diverse religious landscape and consider a variety of ways that religion and government are intertwined in Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, and Iran. Finally, explore major environmental challenges in the Middle East, particularly around water resources, and the ways that Israelis, Jordanians, and Palestinians are cooperating to meet these challenges. *Note: This workshop is focused on history rather than current events. Eligible for 6 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1 consortium seat. If district pays, district approved must be confirmed prior to start of session.
