NYSED Mental Health Briefs VIRTUAL Series – Tier 1: Mental Health Promotion & Prevention – (Brief #5) facilitated by Dana Brown – 9-11am
NYSED released the Mental Health briefs in honor of May Mental Health Awareness month in 2026. Our schools have been supporting mental health awareness through our MTSS frameworks and community based organizations and events throughout the years. These briefs give us an opportunity to cull some high-leverage points and actions to embed in our school activities and instructional and curricular components. Join Dana Brown, former ELA Director, current Safe & Supportive Schools Project Manager for the MHTC, interim principal & assistant principal, and consultant for specialized, day treatment & hospital-based programs, for one or all of the following sessions. While these sessions are not intended to be a thorough review of all of the briefs, we will make authentic meaning for your district out of this latest release by highlighting key implementation points. While our MTSS frameworks can have an extensive number of supports, this session will focus on providing tools, resources, and cross-curricular teaching ideas in two major areas: substance use and addiction prevention and trauma-informed practices. Through this session, we will gather teaching materials and methods across the disciplines that help us educate students on the science, history, and culture surrounding alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and other addictions to support their coping, decision-making, and problem-solving strategies to foster healthy habits and lives. We will also use literature, art, science, history, etc., to help us realize trauma and link this to trauma-sensitive daily routines and resources that help us to respond to the variety of traumas that exist in our world. Eligible for 2 hours CTLE credit. Can use 1/2 Consortium Seat. Eligible for Guidance Consortium seats.
